Home Smoke Alarm User Guide
The frequent occurrence of fire accidents in recent years has made more and more families realize the importance of fire prevention. Therefore, household smoke alarms have entered people's lives. Here, the editor will introduce to you some knowledge about the use of household smoke detectors.
Are household smoke detectors effective?
As the use of smoke alarms continues to increase, the number of deaths from residential fires continues to decline. The National Fire Protection Association report shows that in the event of a fire in a residence with the recommended number of smoke detectors installed, the chances of escaping the occupants of the residence will be 50% higher than those of a residence without installation.
Where should household smoke detectors be installed?
It is necessary to install an alarm in every bedroom. There are many fires that occur in the bedroom, and the closer the alarm is to the fire, the more it can play an alarming role. The purpose of installing a smoke alarm outside the bedroom is to alert the sleeper that a fire has occurred outside the bedroom. If the bedrooms are distributed in different locations in the house, then smoke alarms should be installed in different places. If the residence is large, more than one smoke alarm can be installed on different floors.
Alarms are not recommended for extremely hot or cold locations, where large amounts of smoke and dust are often present, and for attics and similar locations. Another place where you don't need a smoke alarm is the kitchen. False alarms may result if the alarm is installed too close to the cooking appliance.
How to Reduce False Alarms from Household Smoke Detectors
False positives are a serious problem. A smoke alarm that keeps going off when there is no fire, you might remove it so that it won't go off when the fire does.
False positive reason 1: Cooking
Solution: Move the location of the alarm. Placing the alarm further away from the cooking area will reduce false alarms by the time cooking smoke reaches the alarm already thinned out. Choose to buy a photoelectric smoke alarm. Photoelectric alarms are less sensitive to tiny smoke particles, so there will be no false alarms for smoke particles generated by cooking.
False alarm reason two: the influence of steam or moisture
Solution: Install the alarm device in a place far away from steam and moisture, for example, the corridor of the bathroom should not install the alarm, so that the problem can be solved. However, if the alarm is reacting to vapor or moisture when it is working normally, the problem may be the cause of the alarm's aging. Older alarms will become more sensitive and more likely to respond to vapor and moisture. Therefore, the occurrence of false alarms may also be that the alarm has exceeded the service life and needs to be replaced.
Reason 3 for false positives: Smoke from cigarettes
Solution: In general, smoke alarms will not respond to cigarette smoke unless the smoke produced is very dense, for example, many smokers smoking in the same room may cause an alarm. If the alarm is too old, it will respond even at low smoke levels. So conversely, we can also use this to judge whether the alarm has aged.
Four reasons for false positives: power supply
Solution: When the battery is almost used up, it will make a chirping sound about every minute (different models have different intervals and sounds, but they all have a low-battery warning function), and some people will think this is a kind of False positive. But this sound is easy to distinguish because it makes a single, short sound, and it happens about every minute or so. If your alarm sounds like this intermittently, you can replace the batteries to see if that fixes the problem.
Five reasons for false positives: Dust
If the alarm keeps beeping, there may be too much dust in the alarm, and it is time to consider replacing or cleaning the alarm. When cleaning the alarm, hold the end of the vacuum cleaner close to the opening around the alarm and vacuum one by one. In this way, the dust accumulated in the alarm can be completely removed.
Precautions for using household smoke detectors
1. Do not install in places with strong air convection, such as air outlets or windows.
2. The distance from the corner of the wall must be greater than 0.75 meters.
3. It must be dust-proof and moisture-proof.
4. It is strictly forbidden to dismantle and repair by yourself. If you have any questions, please contact the local supplier or the nearest agency (office) in time.
Although household smoke detectors sometimes produce false alarms, we should install them no matter for the safety of our own or others' lives and property.
